"If you don't own a dog, at least
one, there is not necessarily anything wrong with you,
but there may be something wrong with your life."

Westies are a strong and hardy breed, and quite long lived.
However, it's estimated that a small number are affected
with genetic disorders. Some disorders are very rare, while
others are more readily observed. No matter how small
the number, we should strive to completely eradicate
all genetic disorders through sound, ethical, and
informed breeding and testing programs. The West Highland
White Terrier Club of America has compiled information
which may be helpful in recognizing and dealing
with these disorders. The information is organized
as follows:
External: Skin
1. Atopic Dermatitis
2. Epidermal Dysplasia
3. Seborrhea, Primary and Secondary
External: Eyes
1. Juvenile Cataracts
2. Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS)
Internal: Mouth/Jaw
1. Cleft Palate
2. Craniomandibular Osteopathy (CMO)
|
Internal: Skeletal/Muscular
1. Hip Dysplasia
2. Legg-Calve-Perthes
3. Luxated Patella
Internal: Organs/Blood System/Nervous System
1. Copper Toxicosis (CT)
2. Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy (GCL)
3. Inguinal Hernia
4. Pyruvate Kinase (PK) Deficiency
5. White Shaker Syndrome
